Raids mit Marcus Island als Einfallstor hatten Wir auch schon in Erwägung gezogen. Es sind aber extrem lange Anmarschwege zu bewältigen, so dass solche Raids am Besten durch Leichte Kreuzer durchzuführen wären, die über eine entsprechende Reichweite und Geschwindigkeit verfügen. Die sollten dann Jagd auf Konvois machen. Die Geleitschiffe (Patrouillenboote und Escort-Zerstörer) sollten der Feuerkraft eines modernen Leichten Kreuzers nicht gewachsen sein.

Es spielt ja auch eine Rolle, welche Mittel zur Verfügung stehen. Als Rückversicherung könnte auch ein AO-Verband etwas außerhalb des japanischen Hoheitsgebietes warten, evtl. mit einem oder zwei Eskort-Trägern als Sicherung.

Manchmal ist ja auch schon das Auskundschaften solcher Gebiete spannend genug und bietet Stoff für Geschichten. Als Test eignet sich z.B. ein kleiner Zerstörerverband, der für einen gewissen Zeitraum ins den Hinterhof des Feindes eindringt und dort verweilt, so bekommt man das Langzeitverhalten mit, inwieweit ein Seegebiet belebt ist oder eben nicht.

Ohne solche Tests wären wir nie auf die Idee gekommen, das man an Truk oder Japan selbst ungesehen herankommen könnte und doch war es so.

Heute zeigten sich die U-Boote der Sub Fleet Asiatic von ihrer besten Seite. Dem niederländischen U-Boot „K-17“ gelang es, sich an den südlichen Kampfverband des Feindes anzunähern und auf einen leichten Kreuzer zum Schuss zu kommen. Ein erfolgreicher Angriff, der höchstwahrscheinlich mit der Versenkung des Kreuzers geendet hätte, wenn sich der zweite Torpedo, der dem Kreuzer traf, nicht als Blindgänger entpuppt hätte. Bei der anschließenden Verfolgung durch feindliche Zerstörer wurde das U-Boot durch Wasserbomben schwer beschädigt, konnte sich schließlich jedoch aus dem Gefahrenbereich entfernen. Es versucht nun, den rettenden Hafen von Broome zu erreichen.

Östlich der Molukken gelang es “S-37”, aus einem kleinen Konvoi einen Frachter herauszuschießen. Zwei Torpedotreffer waren das Todesurteil für den Frachter. „S-37“ konnte sich anschließend erfolgreich von der Konvoi Sicherung absetzen.

Großkampftag für die neuseeländischen und amerikanischen Bomberbesatzungen der 7. US Luftflotte bei Port Moresby und Milne Bay. Während die neuseeländischen Bomber abgeschnittene japanische Truppen bei Torokina bombardierten, griffen die amerikanischen B17- und B24-Bomber japanische Positionen bei Rabaul und auf Manus an. Man kann durchaus davon ausgehen, dass die Voraussetzungen für die kommenden Landungsoperationen durch die Luftwaffe geschaffen wurden.

Japan scheint aufzuwachen und bombardiert wieder die Bereitstellungsräume der 3. Special Forces Division, jedoch ohne greifbaren Erfolg. Anders die eigenen Luftangriffe, die weitere Feindpanzer ausschalten können. Hier hat der Feind eindeutig zu spät und nicht konsequent genug reagiert.

Das bekam der Feind dann zu spüren, als die indischen Fallschirmjäger im Schutze der eigenen Bombenangriffe in Sturmbooten über den Fluss setzten und die Besatzungen der verbliebenen Panzer überwältigten. Die Reste des japanischen Panzerregimentes konnten zerschlagen und der Brückenkopf gesichert werden. Weitere Teile der Division sollen umgehend nachgeführt werden.

China Command

Die Ruhe auf dem chinesischen Kriegsschauplatz kommt dem chinesischen Oberkommando durchaus entgegen, können das im Rahmen des Möglichen Umgruppierungen durchgeführt werden und an kritischen Punkten Verstärkungen eingeschoben werden. Dennoch steht es schlecht genug für die chinesische Armee. Heute begnügte sich der Feind wieder mit dem Beschuss bestimmter Frontabschnitte durch seine Artillerie.

Wir können immer noch nicht so recht glauben, das Japan der Ausschaltung oder sogar dem drohenden Verlust von Rabaul völlig tatenlos zusehen wird. Irgendwo an der riesigen Front muß doch eine Gegenaktion geplant sein, alles andere würde uns etwas verstören.

Die Vernichtung des Panzerregiments (wenn auch geschwächt) ist auch so ein Highlight, wobei schon der Angriff selbst über einen Fluß hinweg schon für sich eine sportliche Angelegenheit ist, die auch in die Hose gehen kann. Und dann noch "ohne Überlebende", um Japans Militär im allgemeinen muß es in der Tat schlecht bestellt sein.

Wobei angemerkt werden muss, dass das japanische Panzerregiment seit Wochen fast täglich aus der Luft bombardiert wurde. Es war bereits sehr angeschlagen und wohl auch demoralisiert. Dennoch war es natürlich ein Risiko, aber...ohne Risiko kein Gewinn...

Dennoch hätte Japan Zeit genug gehabt, seine Stellungen seit Beginn Unserer Offensive mit Verstärkungen zu festigen. Das ist aber bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht geschehen.

Südlich von Guam griff das U-Boot „Shark“ einen japanischen Geleitzerstörer an. Ein unnötiges Risiko, welches auch nicht zum gewünschten Erfolg führte. Das Feindschiff wich den geschossenen Torpedos aus und drehte den Spieß kurzerhand um. Über mehrere Stunden ging die Jagd und der Skipper der „Shark“ musste alle Register ziehen um sich seiner Haut zu erwehren, was auch schließlich gelang.

Die Vorbereitungen für die Operation “Dynamo” gehen in die Endphase. Die Vorverlegung der Truppen des I. amphibischen Korps sowie des I. und XIV. Vor wenigen Tagen musste der geplante massive Luftangriff auf die japanischen Flugplätze bei Magwe kurzfristig gestoppt werden, da die eigenen Liegeplätze am Golf von Bengalen durch japanische Flottenverbände bedroht wurden. Die Royal Air Force und die 10. US Luftflotte zogen heute kurzfristig rund 400 Jäger und Bomber auf verschiedenen Stützpunkten zusammen. Morgen soll die Operation durchgeführt werden.

Eine neue Bedrohung wurde in Form eines japanischen Trägerkampfverbandes nördlich von Timor in der Banda-See aufgeklärt, der westlichen Kurs hält. Was diese Massierung von schweren Flotteneinheiten zu bedeuten hat, ist noch völlig unklar. Als Reaktion darauf wies die Sub Fleet Asiatic mehrere U-Boote an, sich auf dem möglichen Kurs des Trägerverbandes auf die Lauer zu legen. Die 5. US Luftflotte zieht auf dem Luftwaffenstützpunkt Broome zusätzlich Sturzbomber und Jäger zusammen. Die nächsten 24 Stunden werden hoffentlich Aufschluss über die feindlichen Absichten geben.

Jetzt reagiert Japan doch, und das massiv! Die bei Lashio aufgeklärten Feindverbände entpuppten sich als 1. Panzerdivision. Diese marschiert in Richtung der 3. Special Forces Division. Die 10. US Luftflotte griff die Marschkolonnen dieser Division mehrmals mit Erfolg an. Die japanische Luftwaffe bombardierte im Gegenzug die Stellungen der indischen Fallschirmjäger. Die als Luftsicherung eingeteilten chinesischen Jagdstaffeln waren zu weit entfernt und kamen nicht mehr an die Bomber heran. Der geplante Angriff auf japanische Flugfelder bei Magwe musste wetterbedingt um 1 Tag verschoben werden.

Umgekehrtes Bild im Bereich der Solomonen. Hier scheiterte ein japanisches U-Boot beim Angriffe auf einen großen Truppenkonvoi welcher sich von den Shortlands auf dem Rückweg nach Luganville befand. Die Konvoi Sicherung reagierte schnell und präzise und konnte wohl einige Nahtreffer setzen, die das Feindboot spürbar beschädigt haben dürften.

Von mehreren Stützpunkten aus stiegen heute die Jäger und Bomber der Royal Air Force auf, um den japanischen Luftwaffenstützpunkt Magwe in Zentral-Burma anzugreifen. Das Glück schien auf Seiten der Piloten zu sein, denn kein Feindjäger befand sich über Magwe in der Luft. Wahrscheinlich rechnete auf japanischer Seite niemand mit einem Angriff. So konnten die Bomber mehr oder weniger ungestört ihre Arbeit verrichten.

Stürme und Starkregen hinderten die 7. US Luftflotte heute größtenteils daran, die japanischen Stützpunkte rund um Rabaul zu bombardieren. Heute schließlich konnte die eigentliche Luftoffensive gegen den japanischen Luftwaffenstützpunkt Magwe in Zentral-Burma beginnen. Trotz einer immer noch nicht zufriedenstellenden Wetterlage stiegen von den Flugfeldern bei Cox Bazar die Jagdstaffeln auf, die zur freien Jagd über Magwe eingeteilt waren. Sie hatten den Auftrag, die japanische Luftsicherung in Luftkämpfe zu verwickeln, zu verschleißen und somit den nachfolgenden Bomberverbänden den Weg zu ebnen…und diese Aufgabe erfüllten sie mit Bravour! Fast 30 feindliche Jagdmaschinen konnten die Piloten der Royal Air Force bei nur 3 eigenen Verlusten abschießen.

Als sich die erste Bomberwelle dann der Abwurfzone näherte, war der Himmel praktisch frei von japanischen Jägern. Trotz der schlechten Sicht konnten die einzelnen Staffeln sich halbwegs für den Bombenanwurf positionieren und klinkten schließlich ihre tödliche Last aus. Das Ergebnis war dann schließlich auch durchaus zufriedenstellend.

Was ist nur mit der japanischen Luftwaffe in Burma passiert, das man sie dermaßen vor sich hertreiben kann? Magwe erst gar nicht, dann höchstens halbherzig verteidigt und von Hurricanes!!! auseinandergenommen worden.

Ist das schon der Anfang vom Ende?

Wir können da nur Vermutungen anstellen. Vielleicht hat Unser Gegner generell die Lage in Burma falsch eingeschätzt, was Unseren Willen zur Initiative angeht. In Nord- und Zentralburma scheint die japanische Armee und auch die Luftwaffe nicht wirklich stark vertreten zu sein. Wenn man sich ein eingesetzten Flugzeugmuster ansieht, so sind das wahrlich nicht die Modernsten. A6M2 und Ki43Ic bildeten das Groß der eingesetzten Maschinen, also veraltete Muster. Die Ki44IIa ist zwar ein moderner Flugzeugtyp, doch nur in geringen Zahlen über Magwe eingesetzt. Außerdem kamen Unsere Piloten aus der Überhöhung. In wie fern dass schlechte Wetter und die Qualifikation der jeweiligen Piloten noch ins Gewicht fallen, können Wir nicht sagen. Auf jeden Fall gehen Wir davon aus, das der Feind über Nord- und Zentral Burma zur Zeit keine Luftüberlegenheit besitzt.

In der Tat ist Magwe einer der wichtigen Orte in Burma und verdient einen angemessenen Schutz. Jetzt dürfte es dafür zu spät sein. Sobald Magwe als Luftwaffenstützpunkt ausgeschaltet ist, werden wir Uns die Ölförderanlagen vornehmen.

Die Vorbereitungen für die Operation “Dynamo” nähern sich ihrem Ende. Bis Ende März sollen alle Truppen in den Einschiffungshäfen Shortland und Lunga versammelt sein. Lassen das denn die vereinbarten "üblichen Hausregeln" überhaupt zu? Oder habt ihr keine Beschränkungen bezüglich der strategischen Bombardierungen ausgemacht?

Wenn Japan an zwei sehr wichtigen Fronten (Burma, Rabaul) schon so früh arg schwächelt, könnte man dafür annehmen, das euch dann anderswo vielleicht unangenehme Überraschungen erwarten. Der Gegner kann doch nicht überall so unaufmerksam aufgestellt sein.....oder doch????

Das Agreement bzgl. strategischer Bombardierungen legt ein Verbot bis in das Frühjahr 1943 fest. Und da in Japan ja schon mancherorts das Kirschblütenfest gefeiert wird, ist es Frühjahr! Also....

Angriffe auf Manpower-Zentren sollen angeblich dafür sorgen, dass mehrtägige Brände zusätzliche Schäden verursachen. Allerdings habe ich in letzter Zeit soviel gelesen, dass ich nicht mehr die genaue Quelle weiß.
