Doch der Gegner schlug in gleicher Weise zurück und zwar östlich von Hawaii. Hier gelang es einem japanischen U-Boot, eines der Sicherungsschiffe eines Konvois zu torpedieren und zu versenken. Das Feindboot wurde angegriffen und vermutlich auch beschädigt.

Für das niederländische U-Boot “K-8” stand es heute auf des Messers Schneide! Den ganzen Tag über wurde es nahe der Insel Denpasar von einer japanischen Zerstörer Gruppe gejagt und spürbar beschädigt. Als der Feind am späten Nachmittag die Suche und Bekämpfung aufgab und sich entfernte, tauchte das beschädigte U-Boot auf um die Batterien aufzuladen und Frischluft ins Boot zu lassen. Kaum aufgetaucht, stieß ein japanischer Bomber auf „K-8“ herab und deckte es mit Bomben ein. Wie durch ein Wunder konnte allen Bomben ausgewichen werden. Das U-Boot nimmt nun Kurs auf Perth um im dortigen Trockendock die umfangreichen Schäden beheben zu lassen.

Vor der Küste von Ceylon kam es zu den schwersten Kämpfen gegen japanische U-Boote seit Kriegsbeginn. Grund für die Massierung von Feindbooten nahe des britischen Flottenstützpunktes war wohl die von Japan erwartete Rückkehr der beiden Kreuzergeschwader, die japanische Stützpunkte beschossen hatten. Mit einem dieser beiden Geschwader bekam der Feind auch Kontakt, konnte jedoch keinen Nutzen daraus ziehen. Mehrere Feindboote wurden durch die sichernden Zerstörer bzw. durch selbständige U-Jagdgruppen beschädigt.

Auch die Bomberstaffeln des Fleet Air Arm griffen in die Kämpfe ein und bombardierten mehrfach japanische U-Boote, wobei auch wohl Treffer erzielt worden sind.

China Command

Heute griff der Feind an 2 neuralgischen Punkten die chinesischen Verteidigungsstellungen an, konnte aber keinen abschließenden Erfolg verbuchen, wenn auch der Fall der Stadt Shaoyang wohl nur noch eine Frage von Stunden ist. Südlich von Chungking waren die Verluste auf chinesischer Seite zwar hoch, doch liegen hier auch größere Kontingente um die Verluste wenigstens teilweise zu kompensieren. Im Raum südöstlich von Chungking beließ es der Feind beim Einsatz seiner Artillerie.

Das Seegebiet zwischen den oberen Solomonen und den Neuen Hebriden ist inzwischen bereits Etappe. Lediglich japanische U-Boote versuchen noch, den alliierten Konvoi Verkehr zu stören, was ihnen aber kaum gelingt. Eher droht ihnen die Entdeckung durch U-Jagdgruppen oder wie heute durch Patrouillenmaschinen der US Navy. Treffer konnte leider nicht bestätigt werden.

Eine Jagdstaffel des XIII. US Jägerkommandos griff heute erstmalig von Liegeplätzen auf den Shortlands aus im Tiefflug die japanischen Flugfelder bei Rabaul an. Obwohl dem Feind keine Jägersicherung mehr zur Verfügung steht, fielen die eigenen Verluste erschreckend hoch aus, da der Feind starke Flakverbände und Ballons hier zusammengezogen hat. Von dieser Angriffstaktik wird bis auf Weiteres Abstand genommen.

In China möchte euer Gegner sicherlich möglichst schnell klare Verhältnisse schaffen, um für andere Operationen Bodentruppen und Luftwaffeneinheiten frei zu bekommen. Wahrscheinlich geschieht das jetzt schon in begrenztem Umfang, da der Spielraum für die chinesische Armee immer kleiner wird.

Japans U-Boote scheinen auf die veränderte Situation reagiert zu haben und operieren jetzt weiter nördlich bei den Shortlands. Da jedoch die PBY-Staffeln der US Navy ebenfalls hierhin vorverlegt haben, ändert sich im negativen Sinne nichts für die japanischen U-Boote. Weiterhin müssen sie jederzeit mit einem Angriff aus der Luft rechnen.

Aus der Luft wurde auch Rabaul angegriffen und zwar von den Flugfeldern auf den Shortlands aus. Die 13. US Luftflotte lies erstmalig Marinebomber die Flugfelder bombardieren. Die Luft wird für Japan in dieser Region immer dünner. Die alliierten Streitkräfte haben eindeutig die Luftüberlegenheit über Rabaul.

Von den Luftbasen der Shortlands aus erfolgten heute erneut Luftangriffe leichter Marinebomber gegen Rabaul. Gegenwehr erfolgte lediglich durch japanische Flak. Der Einsatz verlief zufriedenstellend und in den verschiedenen Führungsstellen ist man optimistisch, das Rabaul dauerhaft als Stützpunkt neutralisiert ist und nun für die im kommenden Monat geplante Landung der 6. US Armee „weichgeklopft“ werden kann.

Southwest Pacific

Auch die Bomber des 1st New Zealand Air Corps griffen die japanischen Flugfelder bei Rabaul an. Zwar fehlt es den Besatzungen noch etwas an Erfahrung, doch ist Rabaul ein ideales Trainingsobjekt. Das Ergebnis der Bombardierung ist durchaus zufriedenstellend.

Nahe San Francisco griff ein B25-Bomber ein aufgetaucht fahrendes japanisches U-Boot an. Treffer konnten aber wohl keine erzielt werden, wie die Besatzung nach der Landung zu Protokoll gab.

South Pacific

Anders im Raum der unteren Solomonen. Hier wurden heute nicht weniger als 4(!!!) Feindboote aus der Luft angegriffen und in 2 Fällen wollen die Besatzungen der PBY auch Treffer beobachtet haben.

Rabaul war auch heute wieder das Ziel der Marinebomber. Systematisch soll nun der Stützpunkt zerschlagen werden um in der nächsten Phase die dortigen japanischen Truppen zu bombardieren und zu demoralisieren.

Hier das gleiche Bild, aber die 7. Luftflotte, mit ihren inzwischen beachtlichen Ressourcen, greift simultan mehrere Ziele an. So waren heute Rabaul und Kavieng das Ziel der mittleren und schweren Bomber, wobei fast 100 Bomber des Typs B24 „Liberator“ heute am Boden blieben um sie zu schonen. Der Erfolg spricht für sich.

Nach Abschluss der Planungsphase hat das IV. indische Korps offiziell den Befehl zur Durchführung der Operation „Tiger Leap“ erhalten, welche sich bereits seit Anfang des Jahres in der Vorbereitung befindet. Geplanter Beginn der Operation ist der 20. Februar. Erste Einheiten, darunter die 3rd Special Forces Division, haben ihre Bereitstellungsräume fast erreicht.

Nahe Midway wurde ein japanisches U-Boot aufgespürt und aus der Luft bekämpft. Treffer auf dem Feindboot konnten jedoch nicht beobachtet werden.

South Pacific

Die 13. US Luftflotte griff auch heute massiv die japanischen Flugfelder bei Rabaul an, die inzwischen vollständig unbrauchbar sind. Im nächsten Schritt sollen nun die japanischen Truppen in dieser Region regelmäßig bombardiert werden. Die Vorbereitungen für die Landung bei Rabaul machen weiter gute Fortschritte. Der Stab der 6. US Armee und des XIV. US Korps treffen in wenigen Tagen in Luganville ein.

Central Pacific

Die “Fast Carrier Group” hat am späten Vormittag Pearl Harbor erreicht. Nach fast 8 Monaten im Südpazifik ist ihre Anwesenheit dort nicht mehr erforderlich. Die weiteren Operationen in diesem Gebiet können nun unter dem Schutz landgestützter Maschinen der 7. und 13. US Luftflotte durchgeführt werden. Admiral Nimitz löste den Verband mit einem abschließenden Appell auf. Für die beiden Träger und die schnellen Schlachtschiffe des Verbandes stehen in nächster Zeit einige Überholungs- und Modernisierungsmaßnahmen an. Wenn dann ab Mai die ersten Trägerneubauten zur Verfügung stehen, wird es eine neue schnelle Trägerkampfgruppe geben, das versicherte der Admiral.

South Pacific

Ein von Shortland nach Luganville zurücklaufender Konvoi wurde kurz nach dem Auslaufen von einem japanischen U-Boot beschattet. Die aufmerksame Konvoisicherung entdeckte den Störenfried jedoch zeitig und griff ihn an. Einige Schäden dürften die geworfenen Wasserbomben beim Feindboot angerichtet haben.

Zwischen Truk und Rabaul wurde durch Seeaufklärer ein schwerer japanischer Kampfverband ausgemacht. Bereits gestern wurden in diesem Sektor Feindschiffe gesichtet, jedoch konnten Art der Schiffe sowie der Kurs nicht bestimmt werden. Das war heute anders. Was die Absichten des Feindes sind, kann jedoch noch nicht gesagt werden.

Mit einem letzten Angriff, bevor ab morgen primär die Hafenanlagen bombardiert werden, wurden noch einmal die japanischen Flugfelder bei Rabaul durch leichte Marienbomber der 13. Luftflotte angegriffen. Es ist kaum begreiflich, das Japan diesen wichtigen Stützpunkt nicht konsequenter Verteidigt.

Wir sind immer wieder leicht irritiert, wenn wir in den Berichten lesen, das im Gebiet von Bismarck-Archipel und Neu-Britanien die alliierten Flugzeuge ihre Trainingsflüge absolvieren können. Zu einer Zeit, die normalerweise die Blütezeit des kaiserlichen Japan sein müsste.
Da sind fürwahr einige Fehler gemacht worden, dazu kommt eure offensiv-aggressive Vorgehensweise, dieses Manko auch auszunutzen.

Ist es denkbar, das Japan an anderer Stelle sich verlorenen Boden wieder zurückholt oder ist mit offensiven Aktionen des Gegners nicht mehr zu rechnen (China mal ausgeklammert)?

Gefühlt würden Wir sagen...nein. China wird Japan wohl bis Mitte des Jahres vollständig besetzen. Bis dahin, so hoffen Wir, sind Rabaul, Manus und Kavieng in Unserer Hand und bedrohen Hollandia. Außerdem startet in wenigen Tagen die britische Offensive in Burma.

Wir glauben, dass Japan den Zenit seiner Expansion überschritten hat.

Gleich 2 japanische U-Boote hatten es heute auf den Verband abgesehen, der um das Schlachtschiff “Tennessee” herum aufgebaut war. Die „Tennessee“ ist auf dem Weg von Pearl Harbor nach Los Angeles, um dort planmäßige Modernisierungsmaßnahmen durchführen zu lassen, welche annähernd 9 Monate dauern werden. Die Angreifer wurden erst bemerkt, als an der Steuerbordseite des Zerstörers „Farenholt“ ein Torpedo einschlug. Der zweite Angriff wurde frühzeitig entdeckt und durch ein Ausweichmanöver abgewehrt. Die „Farenholt“ ist schwer beschädigt und die Besatzung kämpft mit schweren Wassereinbrüchen. Dennoch wird versucht, das Schiff nach Pearl Harbor zu retten.

Nahe San Francisco griff eine B25 erneut ein japanisches U-Boot an. Treffer auf dem Feindboot konnten von der Bomberbesatzung jedoch nicht bestätigt werden.

Von Port Moresby aus griffen die B25-Bomber erstmalig Stellungen der japanischen Truppen im Raum Rabaul an. Zwar sind diese durch starke Befestigungen inzwischen vor Bombenangriffen recht gut geschützt, doch der Moral der Soldaten des Tenno dürfte eine fortgesetzte Bombardierung nicht unbedingt zuträglich sein. Verwundert nahm man einen Intel-Meldung zur Kenntnis, nach der sich der Stab der Kombinierten Flotte in Rabaul befinden soll.

Das vor wenigen Tagen von der chinesischen Armee geräumte Hengyang wurde heute erwartungsgemäß von feindlichen Truppen besetzt.

Südöstlich von Chungking versuchte der Feind nach einer längeren Ruheperiode wieder den Durchbruch, um die chinesische Verteidigungsfront endgültig in zwei Teile aufzuspalten. Dieses gelang ihm jedoch nicht. Beide Seiten erlitten hohe Verluste.

Central Pacific

Rund um Pearl Harbor wurden in den letzten Tagen wieder vermehrt japanische U-Boote gesichtet. Erst gestern gelang einem Feindboot östlich von Hawaii die Torpedierung des Zerstörers „Farenholt“. Dieser schleppt sich mit kleinster Fahrt in Richtung des Flottenstützpunktes. Noch hat die Besatzung die Wassereinbrüche halbwegs im Griff und wenn das Wetter sich nicht verschlechtert, hat der Zerstörer eine kleine Chance. Südwestlich von Pearl Harbor griff ein Patrouillenbomber ein feindliches U-Boot an und konnte es wohl auch treffen.

South Pacific

In Luganville wurde unter Konteradmiral Sherman ein Trägerkampfverband zusammengestellt, der sich ausschließlich aus Geleitträgern zusammensetzt. Er soll in den nächsten Tagen nach Darwin verlegen und von dort aus einen Vorstoß in japanisch besetztes Seegebiet unternehmen. Geplant sind Angriffe auf Konvois, sollte man auf welche treffen, sowie die Bombardierung von Ambon und Kendari.

Southwest Pacific

Die verbliebenen japanischen Stützpunkte rund um Rabaul werden weiter attackiert. P38 griffen heute Bodenziele auf Manus an, während neuseeländische Bomber Stellungen des 144. Regiments bei Rabaul angriffen. Auch wenn diese Angriffe keine unmittelbare Wirkung entfalten konnten, zeigen sie dem Feind dennoch auf, wer die Lufthoheit über der Bismarck See hat.

Der Flugplatz der Royal Air Force bei Comilla war heute das Ziel japanischer Bomber. Da der Stützpunkt zur Zeit nur ausgebaut und nicht aktiv genutzt wird, gab es für Japan hier nicht viel zu erben. Rund ein halbes Dutzend Feindbomber wurde der Angriff zum Verhängnis. Die Schäden waren bis zum Abend wieder behoben.

Weitaus schlimmer und verlustreicher sind die rollenden Bombenangriffe des Feindes auf die chinesischen Stellungen bei Siangtan, die täglich mehrere hundert Soldaten töten und verwunden. Leider ist man gegen diese Angriffe machtlos.

Leider konnten Wir den werten Otto Weddingen noch immer nicht erreichen. Auf Unsere PN hat er noch nicht reagiert. Der edle Alith Anar wollte parallel auch bei Unserem Gegner nachforschen. Sollten Wir das Passwort erhalten, wäre es dennoch ein schwieriges Unterfangen für die japanische Seite einen Gegner zu finden, denn die Lage ist für Japan suboptimal. Die Kido Butai vernichtet und die Forschung und Entwicklung neuer Flugzeugtypen scheint auch im argen zu liegen.

Wir geben die Hoffnung aber nicht auf
